@BenBolker Since this is a meta chat room, I suggest we will agree on some general policy regarding Coursera question on r. I suggest that all Coursera questions will be immediately downvoted into oblivion and closed regardless of their content in order to discourage Coursera and their students recommending SO as a supporting site for their courses. The only problem is, that I don't have a good closing reason that will match SO policy, unless I'll have to look for dups for every question.

Or we can we just treat Coursera questions as any other question and forget about all this recent mess

@BenBolker how about if you spot a coursera question that violates their ToS you mention it here and we all flag it for the mods to zap?

@Spacedman The mods couldn't care less about their TOS, that's basically sums up whole issue here. I also have a suspicion, that under the hood, SO management prefers that Coursera (or any other organization) will keep directing students to SE sites in order to increase traffic

@DavidArenburg They are about Qs that encourage breaking other TOS, eg working round API limits or removing attribution strings via CSS - not to mention all the other strictly illegal behaviour.

I guess I don't see the difference between giving free advice on financial questions and giving free advice on questions related to the OP's paying job.

@RomanLuštrik That's apparently pretty easy, just do something really, really stupid that has the potential to endanger many special interest groups. And, FWIW, no independent traders were bailed out. :)

I'm with @BenBolker here, and I almost posted earlier in the week here that I thought you'd misunderstood Ben's motivations for wanting a Coursera tag. Ben's an educator and I took his wanting such a tag as a means for him to alter the way he approached those questions; give general hints not a complete solution, comment with pointers as to how to proceed instead of full answers.

Coursera's honour code system is something they need to work with in an internet-enabled world, this is not something that Stack Overflow can or should be policing. If questions are up to snuff for Stack Overflow then why should anyone but the OP care about how they use any received wisdom? It can be frustrating to see lots of dups, but we see this all the time anyway; I just don't see the need for all the hate at this one specific source.

@EDi Please don't do this. This would just abuse the Stack Overflow system. You vote as you already would; is a question good, well-researched, reproducible, going to help other users etc. If you choose not to answer the questions that you think come from Coursera, that's up to you, but please stick to the Stack Overflow spirit when doing so.

I'm firmly with @GavinSimpson here. I can understand being annoyed by repetitive questions, but it's just not worth getting worked up about.

@Roland i dont think its spam, or-exchange is a real thing that indeed might help the user. asking teh question in a decent format would also help the user...
