I never took the time to understand what Map does, but now I understand.

Map is just mapply with SIMPLIFY = FALSE... It strange it has it's own function though. Too bad there is no built in data.frame with stringsAsFactors = TRUE or functions such sum with na.rm = TRUE as default

I think the idea with Map() is that it's a more "friendly" interface to the "Map/Reduce" style programming which are more common terms than "mapply".

Map, Reduce and Filter are fairly standard functional programming tools. These predate the Hadoop functions, in the sense that Hadoop uses functional style paradigm.
